Pre-Sailing Skills Sessions at West Wight Sports & Community Centre- SUMMER
An introduction to sailing for children in a warm, safe environment. Led by RYA qualified dinghy instructors. Sessions are dryside and in the pool.
This is open to any child who is a beginner or may be feeling a bit nervous about sailing this season or interested in learning in the future. Introduces sailing skills and terms to children using games and fun activities. Children must be water confident but will have a buoyancy aid on throughout the water session. Children must wear suitable footwear/clothes that they can run in at the start in the Sports Hall. They should also bring a short wet suit or t-shirt and shorts on top of swimmers to change into plus buoyancy aid if they have one. Parents - please make sure the children have a snack to eat during the session!
The dry session first includes sailing related games, rigging, clothing advice, knots made easy and basic boat parts. Then the wet session includes swimming in a buoyancy aid, dealing with a capsize, balance, bailing, paddling and how to be rescued safely. The popular finish is steering the boat in a race down the pool. All under 8s must be accompanied by an adult on the premises during the activity.
Dates: Session dates are advertised at the West Wight Sports Centre and on the YSC website and Facebook page. We will have more pre sailing sessions in the pool in the Easter holidays 2025 - dates to be set as yet.
Charge: £30 per child.
Sessions must be booked and paid for in advance by ringing 01983 752168 or popping into the Sports Centre.
